Heatmap

Heatmap View

The Heatmap view is where you review one scan in detail.

Track and compare rankings

This is the view that shows how one business ranks for one keyword across the selected grid. It gives you the full map, summary data, pin details, comparison options, and sharing tools.

What this article covers

In this guide, you will learn:

  • what the Heatmap view is for

  • what each top bar option does

  • how to switch between dates and keywords

  • how to read the business data box

  • how to use the map and pins

  • how the ranking list works

  • how Compare mode works

What this view is for

The Heatmap view is the detailed ranking view inside Rank Tracker.

Use it to:

  • review a specific heatmap

  • see rankings pin by pin

  • switch between saved scan dates

  • compare heatmaps over time

  • review average ranking and market share

  • export or share the results

A simple way to think about it is this:

One Heatmap view = one business + one keyword + one grid, with the option to compare dates.

Top bar overview

The top bar gives you the main controls for the heatmap.

Last grid date

At the top of the page, you will see the date of the latest saved grid.

This tells you which scan you are currently viewing.

Time range filter

Use this to narrow the date range of available heatmaps.

This is helpful when you have multiple scans saved over time and want to focus on a specific period.

Heatmap summary

This area gives you a quick summary of the current heatmap.

It helps you review the scan without needing to inspect every pin first.

Refresh Now

Use this to run a fresh update for the current heatmap.

This is useful when you want the most recent ranking data.

Compare Dates

This option appears when there are at least two saved heatmaps for the same business and keyword.

Use it to compare ranking changes between different scan dates.

Date selector and comparison data

Below the top bar, you may see a dropdown that lets you choose different saved scan dates.

Use this to switch between previous heatmaps for the same business and keyword.

When comparison data is available, the page may also show change metrics so you can see how performance moved between one date and another.

This is useful for spotting:

  • ranking improvements

  • ranking drops

  • stronger or weaker market coverage over time

Business data box

The business data box gives you quick information about the business tied to that heatmap.

This section may include:

  • business name

  • address

  • review data

  • average ranking

  • market share

  • keyword selector

Business name and address

This confirms which business the heatmap belongs to.

Always check this first if you manage multiple businesses.

Use this to open the heatmap in a separate window.

This is useful when you want a larger working view or want to compare screens side by side.

Reviews data

This section shows review-related information tied to the business profile.

This gives extra context while reviewing rankings.

Keyword dropdown

Use this dropdown to switch between keywords being tracked for that business.

Each keyword has its own heatmap.

That means when you change the keyword here, you are opening a different heatmap for the same business.

Average Ranking

Average Ranking shows the average position across all pins in the current grid.

This gives you a quick summary of how the business is performing across the full area.

Market Share

Market Share helps show how much of the visible grid presence belongs to that business compared to others showing up in the scan.

This gives another way to understand visibility beyond just average ranking.

Pin details and pie chart

When you click a pin, the page updates to show more detail for that location.

This section helps you understand what is happening at that exact point in the grid.

It may include:

  • the ranking position at that pin

  • the business list for that location

  • visual chart data, such as a pie chart

The pie chart helps summarize the ranking distribution or visibility breakdown for that point or scan view.

Share and PDF tools

Share button

Use Share when you want to send the heatmap to someone else.

This is useful for internal reviews, client updates, or quick reporting.

PDF button

Use PDF when you want to export the heatmap as a report.

This is helpful for meetings, client reporting, or keeping a saved copy of the data.

Map and grid

The map is the main visual area of the Heatmap view.

This is where the full ranking grid appears.

Grid center

At the center of the grid, you will usually see the Google Business Profile location marked with a GBP icon.

This acts as the reference point for the scan.

Service Area Business location

For a Service Area Business, the center point may be based on the business location used in the platform for scanning purposes.

This does not always mean it is a walk-in storefront. It is the point used to build the grid around the business.

Grid pins

Each pin is one search location on the map.

Each one answers the question:

If someone searched from this exact point, where would the business rank?

That is why pins matter so much.

They show visibility street by street, not just one citywide estimate.

Pin interaction

The grid is interactive.

Clicking a pin

When you click a pin, the business ranking list appears on the right side.

This shows which businesses ranked at that location and in what order.

Hovering over a business in the ranking list

When you hover over a business in the ranking list, the map highlights where that business is located.

This helps you connect the ranking result to the actual competitor location on the map.

Compare mode

Compare mode is available when there are at least two saved heatmaps for the same business and keyword.

Use it to compare one date against another.

This helps you measure:

  • ranking improvements

  • ranking losses

  • market share changes

  • visibility movement across the grid

GBP metrics and what they mean

The Heatmap view can show several Google Business Profile metrics tied to the selected business.

The most common ones to focus on are:

Average Ranking

The average position across all pins in the grid.

Market Share

A visibility measure that helps show how much of the grid presence belongs to the business.

Reviews

Review data tied to the business profile.

These metrics are different from each other.

Average Ranking tells you how high the business tends to rank.

Market Share tells you how much of the visible area the business controls.

Reviews give business profile context, but they are not the same thing as ranking performance.

Why this view matters

The Heatmap view is where Rank Tracker becomes most useful.

This is the page that lets you move past summary tables and see the actual ranking pattern across the map.

Use it when you want to:

  • inspect one keyword in detail

  • see ranking changes over time

  • review competitor presence at specific locations

  • export or share a visual report
